DStv SuperSport Channel Shake-Up: Football Gets New Home As Variety Channels Are Renamed

  • MultiChoice is renaming several SuperSport Variety channels from 18 August, replacing them with sport-specific brands
  • SuperSport Football Plus will serve as a dedicated home for premium football, including UEFA Champions League matches
  • Four entertainment channels are also set to leave the DStv platform from 16 September amid a broader restructuring

MultiChoice is set to overhaul a significant portion of DStv's SuperSport channel lineup, retiring the long-standing Variety branding in favour of dedicated sport-specific channels from 18 August.

The most prominent change will see SuperSport Variety 1 rebranded as SuperSport Football Plus, positioning it as the go-to destination for premium football coverage, including selected UEFA Champions League matches and other major competitions. SuperSport Variety 2 will be renamed SuperSport KickOff, catering for additional football content when multiple fixtures are broadcast simultaneously.

New sport-specific channels take shape

Beyond football, SuperSport Variety 3 will transition to SuperSport Africa, with a focus on South African and continental sporting events. SuperSport Variety 4 will be renamed SuperSport Action, while the existing SuperSport Action channel is being repositioned as SuperSport Extra, offering overflow capacity when major events clash on the schedule.

MultiChoice confirmed the rationale behind the changes, stating:

"The SuperSport updates introduce clearer, sport-specific channels, making it even easier for fans to find their favourite sporting action."

The shift moves SuperSport away from the generic Variety naming convention that has been part of the DStv lineup for years, replacing it with branding that signals content at a glance. Football supporters, in particular, will benefit from knowing precisely where to find key matches without navigating across multiple channels.

Entertainment channels are also leaving DStv

The SuperSport restructuring is not the only significant change ahead for DStv subscribers. From 16 September, four entertainment channels will be removed from the platform entirely: Mzansi Bioskop, Mzansi Music, M-Net Movies 1 and kykNET Lekker. MultiChoice has framed the broader exercise as a move towards a leaner, more focused channel offering.

The adjustments come as MultiChoice continues to reshape DStv following Canal+'s takeover of the pay-TV operator, with the company consolidating its content strategy across both sport and entertainment.
