Golden Arrows produced a stunning result on Sunday, defeating Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in the first leg of their MTN8 semi-final at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.
Despite Sundowns controlling large portions of possession and creating the more dangerous opportunities throughout the afternoon, it was the visitors who walked away with all three points, putting themselves in a commanding position ahead of the second leg.

The game's only goal came from Junior Dion, who made no mistake when his first opportunity of the match presented itself. The striker slotted the ball past Ricardo Goss, who was making his first start for Sundowns since 2022 following a series of loan spells away from the club. The scoreline remained 1-0 at half-time and Arrows managed to protect their lead through a stop-start second half played in the intense Atteridgeville heat.
**What Arrows Must Do to Reach the Final**
Football analyst Uche Anuma, speaking to Briefly News after the match, outlined what Golden Arrows would need to execute in the return leg to eliminate the Brazilians from the competition.
"Mamelodi Sundowns would need two goals for them to have a chance to qualify for the next which means they will come all out to get the win in the second leg, Arrows have an away goal advantage and also playing at home in the return leg," Anuma said.
He added that Arrows' success in the second leg would depend heavily on their defensive discipline and clinical finishing. "They need a good game plan that would keep Sundowns from scoring and also hitting them on counter. They would get chances, but what would matter most is them converting them."
With the advantage of an away goal and home ground in the return fixture, Golden Arrows have placed themselves in a strong position to reach the MTN8 final for the first time in recent memory. Sundowns, meanwhile, will need a significant improvement in front of goal if they are to overturn the deficit.
