Former Kaizer Chiefs footballer Levy Mokgothu has been released on R2 500 bail after his arrest over an unpaid alcohol bill of R84 161.80 at a Sandton drinking establishment.

Mokgothu appeared before the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday, 1 September 2026. NPA South Gauteng spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole confirmed the outcome, stating: "He was granted R2,500 bail and the matter was postponed to 5 October for further investigations."
What happened at the Sandton establishment
According to a police statement compiled by Sergeant Shirindza of Sandton Police Station, officers were called to the scene at approximately 4pm on 30 August 2026. The statement reads:

"Complainant alleges that on 2026-08-30 at about 04:00 he was on duty. While he was on duty, a customer failed to pay his bill of R84 161.80. He called the police and the suspect was arrested and detained at Sandton Police Station."
Mokgothu's football career
Mokgothu previously featured for two of South Africa's most prominent football clubs, Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows, before the incidents that led to his arrest this week. The case has been postponed to 5 October 2026 to allow for further investigations.
