Former Kaizer Chiefs Player Levy Mokgothu Arrested Over R84 000 Sandton Bar Bill

Former Kaizer Chiefs player Levy Mokgothu appeared before the Randburg Magistrate Court on 31 August 2026 after his arrest the previous day for allegedly failing to pay an alcohol bill exceeding R84 000 at a Sandton drinking establishment.

According to sources and a police statement seen by Africa Daily, Mokgothu arrived at the venue in Sandton, Johannesburg, on Sunday, 30 August 2026, accompanied by friends. The group ordered alcohol and spent several hours at the establishment before staff presented the bill totalling R84 161.80.

What happened at the Sandton venue

When waiters asked Mokgothu to settle the account, he allegedly told them he did not have sufficient funds to cover the amount. Staff escalated the matter to their supervisor, identified only as Mr Sani, who engaged with Mokgothu before contacting the police.

Officers arrived at the scene at approximately 4 pm. A police statement compiled by Sergeant Shirindza of Sandton Police Station recorded the complainant's account:

"While he was on duty, a customer failed to pay his bill of R84 161.80. He called the police and the suspect was arrested and detained at Sandton Police Station."

Gauteng Police confirm bilking charge

Gauteng police spokesperson Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed the arrest, stating that a case of bilking had been opened at Sandton on 30 August 2026.

"A 37-year-old man has been arrested and will appear before the Randburg Magistrate's Court on 31 August 2026," Sibeko said.

Mokgothu, who also represented Moroka Swallows during his football career, was detained at Sandton Police Station overnight ahead of his court appearance.
