Pitso Mosimane has wasted no time making his intentions clear after being officially unveiled as the new Bafana Bafana head coach on Tuesday, stating that improved performances at the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup are his primary targets.
Mosimane takes charge of the senior national team following the departure of Hugo Broos, who guided Bafana Bafana for five years. Under Broos, the side claimed third place at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast before exiting at the Round of 16 in Morocco in the most recent edition of the tournament. The team also made history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, advancing to the second round in a tournament shared across Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
**Mosimane's Key Objectives for Bafana**
Speaking at his unveiling, Mosimane made clear that those benchmarks represent a floor, not a ceiling.
"We have to do better than what we have done in the last AFCON," he said. "We have to move for better than what we have done in the AFCON. We have to move much better in the World Cup. It's possible, and I think you agree that we might have had the chance to can move further in the World Cup, right? So those are the key objectives."

**A Wiser Coach Returns After 14 Years**
This appointment marks Mosimane's second stint at the helm of the national side, his first having come 14 years ago. He acknowledged the significant distance he has travelled as a coach since then, pointing to a decorated career at club level with Mamelodi Sundowns and Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
"Between the time I was here and 14 years back there's a lot that has happened," Mosimane said. "Remember 14 years back I didn't win even the MTN8 Cup or Nedbank Cup never mind any league or been to a… I don't want to be boasting about what we have achieved. I think it's been a long journey and I'll say there's 21 medals in between now and 14 years back, loaded with about four FIFA World Cups, three in club and one in national team. I don't want to be mentioning a lot of accolades but I think the system is loaded enough now."
