Mosimane eyes top spot in group
Pitso Mosimane's side opened their qualifying campaign with a 2-1 victory over Guinea at Orlando Amstel Arena last Saturday, while Eritrea drew 1-1 with Kenya in Nairobi on the same day. A win on Wednesday would put South Africa clear at the top of their group.
The equation is made more favourable by Guinea hosting Kenya in Conakry at the same kick-off time. Should Guinea drop points, Bafana Bafana would be well placed to lead the standings, having already beaten the Guineans.
Eritrea present a manageable challenge on paper, ranked 184th in the current FIFA standings, though Mosimane will need to navigate a notable injury concern.
Left-back Aubrey Modiba suffered a hamstring injury during Saturday's match and will not be available for selection. In his place, the coach can turn to Fawaaz Basadien or Samukele Kabini, who scored the decisive goal against Guinea and will be looking to carry that form into Cairo.
