Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane has applauded Amajita after South Africa’s Under-20 side successfully defended their COSAFA U20 Championship title in Mozambique.
Raymond Mdaka’s team beat the hosts 2-1 in Sunday’s final, 27 September 2026, completing a five-match winning run and securing qualification for the 2027 CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.
Pitso Mosimane praises Amajita progress
Mosimane, speaking through the South African Football Association (SAFA), highlighted the role of the Under-20 programme in preparing players for the senior national team.

“What we are doing is very, very good. Congratulations to coach Raymond,” Mosimane said.
“He has repeatedly taken the team forward, put the team up there and also given us the foundation for the SA Under-23s and to Bafana-Bafana. He said, look at what we have, and what is coming.”
His comments come as Amajita prepare to move from regional success to the continental stage.
Amajita complete unbeaten COSAFA campaign
Amajita were unbeaten throughout the tournament, winning all five of their matches. They began with a 3-0 victory over Lesotho before seeing off Angola 2-0 and Eswatini by the same scoreline. A 4-2 win over Zambia then booked their place in the final, where they edged hosts Mozambique 2-1.
The campaign produced 13 goals for South Africa, while their defence allowed only three. Their strong run was also reflected in the individual awards, with Steven Mendes claiming the Golden Boot after scoring six times. Goalkeeper Takalani Mazhamba was named the tournament’s best goalkeeper.
The final produced another closely contested encounter. Oarabile Booysen gave South Africa the lead, but Mozambique responded through Martinho Comecar. Mendes then stepped up from the penalty spot to score the decisive goal and seal another COSAFA U20 title for Amajita.

Danny Jordaan looks ahead to Ghana
SAFA president Danny Jordaan also praised Mdaka and the players following their successful campaign.
“This is a credit to the coach and the wonderful players that we have,” Jordaan said.
“They really showed us that they are the best in Southern Africa and now they are going to Ghana 2027.”
Amajita’s next major challenge will therefore be the U20 AFCON in Ghana, where they will take their regional title-winning momentum onto the continental stage.
Ronwen Williams’ Emile Witbooi praise adds another layer
