Alberton Rugby Club Mourns Duan Taylor, Player and Referee Who Died Suddenly

The Alberton rugby community is mourning the sudden death of Duan Taylor, a player and referee affiliated with Alberton Rugby Club, commonly known as "die Elande." Those who knew him have described the loss as one of the biggest shocks of their lives.

Taylor matriculated from Hoërskool Marais Viljoen in 2021 and had since built a presence in local rugby both as a player and as a referee. At the time of his death, he was also employed as a staff member at Laerskool President Steyn.

Alberton Rugby Club pays tribute

Alberton Rugby Club published a tribute on Facebook, describing Taylor's death as a loss felt well beyond the boundaries of the field.

"The Elande family is mourning the loss of a rugby teammate and referee that is felt far beyond the field. It is the loss of a brother, a friend, a mentor, and a respected member of the rugby family. His memories, spirit, and contribution to the game will always remain with those who shared the field with him. Rest in peace. Forever part of the Elande rugby family," the club wrote.

Hoërskool Marais Viljoen also issued a public condolence, directing its message to Taylor's family and to Laerskool President Steyn "on the loss of a valued staff member."

Family and community remember Taylor

Well-wishers have extended their sympathies to his parents, Jo-annette and Charles Taylor, with tributes noting that he had recently been establishing a reputation for himself as a referee within the local rugby structures.

The outpouring of condolences reflects the esteem in which Taylor was held across multiple communities, from his former school and club to his workplace.
