Hoërskool Kirkwood is mourning the death of former pupil and first XV rugby captain Tiaan van Heerden, who died in a fatal crash in the early hours of Saturday, 22 August 2026, along with his girlfriend, Anka.

Van Heerden matriculated from the school in 2023 and was remembered by Hoërskool Kirkwood on its official Facebook page as the captain of its first XV rugby team during his matric year. The school described him as a friendly and hardworking young man who made a lasting impression on the Kirkwood community.

The young couple who died together
Tiaan and Anka had been together for nearly two years at the time of the crash. The two reportedly first crossed paths in August 2024 at a rugby match held at Hoërskool Despatch, where Tiaan noticed Anka playing hockey.

They began their relationship officially that December and were said to have shared a deep love of sport, Tiaan through rugby, and Anka through hockey, hammer throw and dance. They would have marked two years together on 8 December 2026.
According to accounts shared on Facebook, the crash occurred at approximately 02:26 am on the main road near a set of traffic lights, close to the turn-off to a local steel plant. The posts state that Van Heerden and Anka were seated in the back of a bakkie at the time of the incident and sustained fatal injuries.
Tributes pour in from school and teammates
The Hoërskool Kirkwood community responded with an outpouring of grief online, with former teammates and community members remembering Van Heerden as someone who was always full of jokes and smiles. One former teammate, who recalled playing rugby alongside him during their first year at St Columcille, described him as a man of few words but with a warm sense of humour and a ready smile.

The school extended its condolences to Van Heerden's parents, Magna and Rod van Heerden, and his brother Uli, and asked its community to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers.
