INDIA — President Cyril Ramaphosa extended formal gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for Moscow's backing of South Africa's G20 presidency.
The South African President expressed his gratitude during a bilateral meeting at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India, on 11 September 2026.
Footage from the official engagement, filmed at the BRICS summit venue with South African and Russian flags prominently displayed, captured Ramaphosa addressing his Russian counterpart across a formal conference table.

"I want to thank you once again for Russia's support for South Africa's G20 presidency and for your country's support for South Africa's priorities," Ramaphosa said during the meeting.
"Many people believe that the G20 that was held in South Africa was very successful and in large measure it was also due to the support that we received from Russia."
The president acknowledged that the summit, while successful, had not been without difficulty. He noted that some parties had been reluctant to engage fully. The United States were the only nation that boycotted the summit.
"It was not an easy summit, but we were able to overcome the challenges from those who did not want to fully participate, but it was a good summit," Ramaphosa said.
Ramaphosa praises Russia as SA's ally
Briefly News reported that President Ramaphosa reiterated the critical role the Kremlin plays as South Africa's important ally.
He pointed out that Russia helped the country during its struggle against the Apartheid regime.
South Africans agreed with Ramaphosa, and many considered Russia one of the country's significant allies.
