Lesufi Dismayed After Learning R430m Spent Cleaning Gauteng Schools

- It has emerged that over R430 million was spent 'deep cleaning' schools in Gauteng

- This was revealed in a report compiled by the provincial education department's HOD

- Education MEC in the province, Panyaza Lesufi has expressed his shock over the situation

A staggering amount of over R430 million was spent on decontaminating, disinfecting and deep cleaning Gauteng schools.

This steep figure was contained in a report into the spending which was compiled by the Gauteng education department's Head of Department.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has expressed his shock over the revelation, confirming that consultations with law enforcement agencies are underway.

Panyaza signalled his commitment to ensuring that those responsible are held accountable:

“I wish to reaffirm my commitment to leave no stone unturned on this, including holding those who procured these services accountable.”

Jacques Maree, writer for the Democratic Alliance, weighed in with his view on this response, commenting that:

"Ramaphosa is perpetually shocked by the looting & incompetence of his party, thereby distancing himself from it all. It now seems this clever tactic is catching on among his cadres. Pretty soon they're all going to be astonished, astounded and appalled by everything they've done."

Meanwhile, Briefly.co.za reported that Gauteng Premier David Makhura has opted to strip Health MEC Bandile Masuku of his position in response to scandals connected with Covid-19 relief.

Makhura had met with African National Congress leadership in order to discuss the embattled MEC's fate and evidently determined to cut ties with Masuku.

This comes after a Special Investigations Unit report blamed Masuku as the responsible party for the personal protective equipment scandal that prompted him to voluntarily step aside.
