Prince William has defended the royal family of the United Kingdom (UK) against accusations of racism levelled by his brother Prince Harry and sister-in-law Meghan, saying the royals are not a racist family.
The Duke of Cambridge becomes the first royal to directly address the remarks made in the explosive interview his brother and Meghan gave to Oprah Winfrey.
William made the remarks while visiting a school in East London in the company of Kate Middleton where the royal couple congratulated teachers involved in the school's reopening following the coronavirus lockdown.
During the outing, a reporter asked William if he had spoken to his brother since the Duke of Sussex's interview with Oprah Winfrey, during which he made claims about the royal family.
"I have not spoken to him yet but I will do," William replied.
Buckingham Palace has been rocked by a media frenzy since the explosive interview about the couple's reasons for exiting royal life which aired in the United States on Sunday, March 8, and the United Kingdom on Monday, March 9.
In a 61-word statement, Buckingham Palace attempted to respond to Harry and Meghan's allegations of racism and mistreatment, but it failed to quell the controversy.
"The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan," Buckingham Palace said in a statement on the queen's behalf.
"The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members," it read on.
Briefly.co.za reported Harry and Meghan's comments to Oprah detailed issues from mental health to royal protocol but also race.
Meghan said Harry told her that royal insiders had expressed "concerns" about how dark the skin of their children might be.
The couple declined to name the individual who made the alleged comments, but Winfrey later said that Harry had made clear it was neither Queen Elizabeth II, his grandmother, nor her husband, Prince Philip.
