The world of activism has lost one of its most enduring voices. Gloria Steinem, the trailblazing feminist and writer whose work reshaped how society understood gender and equality, died peacefully at her home in New York City on Wednesday, 2 September 2026. She was 92 years old.
Gloria's Foundation broke the news in a formal statement, confirming she was surrounded by loved ones at the time of her passing. No cause of death was disclosed.
A life dedicated to equality
Steinem first captured national attention in the United States during the late 1960s and early 1970s, emerging as one of the defining voices of second-wave feminism. In 1972, she co-founded Ms. magazine, a publication that gave women an unfiltered platform to speak on systemic inequality, reproductive rights, and gender equity at a time when few outlets would.

Talking Circles and a forthcoming book
In her later years, Steinem channelled her energy into two passions: writing and community. Her New York brownstone became a gathering space, hosting hundreds of guests through a tradition she called Talking Circles, which her foundation confirmed will continue in her honour.
She was also putting the finishing touches on a forthcoming memoir titled An Unexpected Life. In it, she wrote: "I have now lived for more than fifty years in this brownstone, in rooms that have witnessed lives before mine, and will know others after I am gone."
The foundation's statement described the book and her vision for her home to become a lasting centre for social justice movements as "among the many gifts Gloria has given the world with the hope they have ripple effects for generations to come." She often drew inspiration from the saying: "The flap of a butterfly's wing can change the weather hundreds of miles away."
Following the announcement, hundreds of tributes poured in from supporters across the globe, each celebrating the extraordinary mark she left on history. Gloria's Foundation asked those wishing to honour her memory to make a donation to the Gloria's Foundation in place of other gestures.
