NORTH WEST - A video showing a learner verbally confronting a teacher in an aggressive and disrespectful manner has gone viral, drawing widespread condemnation across South Africa.
In the clip, the learner raises their voice, points at the teacher and uses threatening gestures, showing no regard for the educator's authority.
The North West Department of Education was quick to respond, describing the behaviour as unacceptable and making clear that schools must remain safe and respectful spaces for both teachers and learners.
North West Education steps in
According to IOL, the department confirmed the incident had been escalated to the relevant district office, with school management instructed to begin the appropriate disciplinary processes in line with the South African Schools Act and the institution's code of conduct.

Spokesperson Dr Elias Malindi made the department's position clear, saying educators should never have to endure abuse or humiliation while doing their jobs.
"Teachers are the backbone of our society. They are entrusted with the responsibility of nurturing young minds, and they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect at all times," he said.
Dr Malindi also warned that there would be real consequences for the learner involved.
"We want to send a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated. Disciplinary action will be taken," he said.

Parents called to take responsibility
Beyond the school, the department placed part of the responsibility on families. Dr Malindi urged parents and guardians to actively teach children the values of respect, accountability and obedience at home, so those values carry through into the classroom.
"Parents must reinforce the importance of respect, accountability, and obedience at home, so that these values are reflected in the classroom," he said.
The department also asked the public to stop sharing the video, noting that continued circulation could cause further harm to the people involved.
