Why Comparing Insurance Could Be One of the Smartest Ways To Save!

If you’re not shopping around, you’re in the minority. Globally, consumers are under increasing financial pressure and are changing the way they shop in search of better value. From groceries and household essentials to larger financial decisions, consumers are comparing more carefully and looking for platforms that make it easier to find the right deal without any complexity.

This shift is especially relevant in insurance where cost, cover and confidence all matter.

“In an environment where every rand counts, comparison platforms help consumers shop smarter. By bringing multiple insurance options together in one place, consumers can compare cover, pricing and benefits in minutes rather than spending hours researching individual providers. The result is greater convenience, more informed decision-making and confidence that they are securing the right cover at a competitive price,” says Ashley Smart, CEO of Hippo.co.za.

The insurance price comparison market is expanding rapidly due to increased digital adoption and growing consumer demand for transparent insurance pricing. Over 65% of global insurance buyers now use comparison tools before purchasing an insurance policy 1. In South Africa, Hippo has seen 23% year-on-year growth over the past four years.

To capitalise on this growing demand, Hippo has refreshed its online platform, creating a more intuitive, mobile-first experience that helps consumers compare, choose and take the next step with greater speed and confidence.

“Our refreshed platform offers a modern, mobile-first experience with simplified navigation and a more intuitive customer journey. Enhancements such as one-click quotes, secure OTP verification and smarter comparison tools reduce friction, making it easier to quote, buy and re-buy insurance,” explains Smart.

Consumer feedback also helped shape the new experience. One of the most significant changes is that Hippo will no longer contact customers after they have compared quotes. Instead, only the insurer selected by the customer will make contact at a pre-arranged time to help finalise cover, reducing unwanted calls and creating a more streamlined experience.

In addition, the enhanced platform offers consumers more choice than ever before, with 13 car insurance partners and a network of more than 50 partners across Hippo's product range. This broader partner ecosystem gives consumers access to a wider range of options, making it easier to compare, choose and secure cover that best meets their needs.

“Increased choice and an enhanced digital experience both align to Hippo’s overall evolution, which sees the platform shifting from primarily a quote comparison website to the starting point for smarter insurance shopping,” concludes Smart.
