A photo of American R&B legend Brandy, snapped with media personality and fan Latrell Phillips, sent South African social media into a frenzy for all the wrong reasons.
Phillips shared the image on Instagram on 8 August 2026, taken in Atlanta, Georgia, with the caption: "One of the greatest R&B vocalists of all time: Black Cinderella, The Vocal Bible. Brandy."
The post made its rounds before landing on South African X (formerly Twitter), where things took an unexpected turn.
X user @Zikamnyamane posted the photo with the caption, "Mam'Brandy has landed eMzansi," leading plenty of followers to genuinely believe the singer had arrived in South Africa. While Brandy is expected to visit the country, that trip is only scheduled for December.

The confusion, however, was entirely outfit-driven. Brandy wore a long-sleeved, loose-fitting blouse featuring a scenic architectural print, paired with a matching skirt. She finished the look with boots, a roughly tied head wrap and a checkered tote bag, an ensemble that many South Africans said reminded them of their aunties rather than a Hollywood star.
What might surprise fans is the price tag behind the modest-looking look. The top alone, sold by Johnny Was Loubellah, retails for $285 (approximately R5 321,98).

"She definitely looks like a 'mama Brandy.'"
mosa_phalane was confused:
"Why does she look like a Nigerian woman, ready to play a role on blood sisters?"

"She looks like those aunties from Langa in Cape Town."
Beyond the outfit laughs, the photo also reignited concern about Brandy's health. Fans have recently been vocal about worrying over the singer's well-being after another photo from an event surfaced online, with users questioning whether she appeared unwell or was simply exhausted from her busy schedule.
