Grammy-winning R&B singer Mya has been given a memorable welcome to South Africa, receiving a star on the Ndlala Mall Walk of Fame before she has even performed a single note on South African soil. The honour was presented to the American singer shortly after she arrived in the country on Thursday, making her debut visit one she is unlikely to forget.
Mya touched down ahead of her headline slot at the second Ndlala Grandeur soirée, a three-night entertainment programme hosted at Ndlala Mall. She joins American singer Joe Thomas as an inductee on the Walk of Fame, after Thomas received his own star when he performed at the Ndlala Mall relaunch in August 2025.

For Mya, the recognition carried a significance that went beyond the accolade itself. She described the moment she landed as an immediate emotional connection to the continent.

"When I touched down on the motherland, I felt welcome," she said, adding that the reception felt like being welcomed home rather than arriving somewhere unfamiliar.
She also reflected on receiving the honour in the company of people she considers part of her own heritage.
"What better way to celebrate and be honoured than with your own brothers and sisters? It means a lot," she said.
What can fans expect from Mya's SA show?
Mya will share the stage on opening night with American singer RL, South African musician Zonke and DJ Young. She plans to perform for roughly an hour, backed by her live band, and has promised a set that covers every chapter of her career.
"All of the hits, all of the classics, and some of my independent catalogue, along with some covers that I really, really love to perform live," she said.
The Case of the Ex hitmaker revealed she has a particular fondness for music from different eras and intends to weave some of that into her performance.
"You know, I love 70s music and 90s music too, so you're gonna hear me doing some covers of some other artists," she said.
She also confirmed that choreography will be part of the package.
"I love to dance, so you're gonna get the little dancing steps too," she teased.
Asked how she was feeling ahead of her South African debut, Mya kept it simple.
"Wonderful. I feel rested," she said, adding that she and her team were fully prepared. "We're so ready to perform and give the people a wonderful show tomorrow."
