Legendary South African actor Sello Maake kaNcube has publicly lashed out at the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture after the death of veteran actor, poet, and playwright Sol Rachilo, who perished in a house fire on 15 August 2026 at the age of 96. Africa Daily reports that Maake KaNcube wrote a scathing email directed at senior departmental officials, accusing the government of a pattern of hollow celebration, honouring artists only once they are gone.

"Government's responsibility to artists cannot begin at the funeral," he wrote. "It cannot be limited to condolence statements, tributes, photographs, speeches and declarations of how much a person contributed to South Africa."

What makes the outburst particularly pointed is that Maake KaNcube had raised the alarm about Bra Sol's situation before his death. Days earlier, he had appealed to followers and fellow creatives to rally around the veteran, describing his circumstances as "deeply concerning." He also revealed that previous attempts to engage the department on artist welfare had gone completely unanswered. His frustration boiled over into a broader challenge

"How many more artists must reach the end of their lives in circumstances that could have been addressed through meaningful intervention, only for government to later issue beautiful, flowery statements devoid of fragrance about their legacy?"

Maake KaNcube was careful to draw a distinction between the department's institutional failures and Minister Gayton McKenzie personally, making clear his criticism targets the culture within DSAC as a whole. He compared its leadership to the captain of the Titanic, sitting at the helm of something precious without truly grasping its value.

"The creative industry is not a peripheral sector; it is the soul, memory, identity and economic engine of a nation," he argued, urging officials to act while artists are still alive to benefit."

Sello Maake KaNcube's pattern of activism

This is not the first time Maake KaNcube has gone to bat for a fellow thespian. In July 2026, he publicly defended actor Seputla Sebogodi after a viral photo sparked unfounded rumours that he had fallen on hard times. Tragically, Sebogodi passed away on 15 July following complications related to diabetes, just days after Maake kaNcube had spoken out in his defence.
