South Africa has lost one of its most treasured creative voices. Sol Rachilo, affectionately known as Bra Sol, died on Sunday, 16 August 2026, at Bheki Mlangeni Hospital. He was 91 years old. The Market Theatre Foundation broke the news the following day, describing the moment as deeply saddening for the entire arts community.
Born in Pietermaritzburg in 1935, Rachilo went on to leave a lasting mark across the Vaal, Soweto, Newtown and beyond. He wore many hats throughout his life as an actor, playwright, poet, drama teacher and cultural activist, earning a reputation as someone who was both gentle in spirit and fierce in artistic conviction. His passing comes just over a month following the death of veteran actor Seputla Sebogodi.
Sol Rachilo remembered on his passing
Rachilo's body of work spans decades of South African cultural history. As a playwright, he authored productions including Lakutshona Ilanga, Three in Number, The Township Housewife and Grounded in Mshenguville. On stage and screen, he delivered memorable performances in No-Good Friday, Sponono and Gangsters, while his film credit in Game for Vultures and television appearance in Lisenethini further cemented his standing as one of the country's most valued talents.

The Market Theatre Foundation described him as "a living archive with rich memory, embodying the histories, struggles, dreams and stories of his people." His career stretched from his debut as a performer in the 1950s right through to his final years, making him a cornerstone of South African cultural identity across multiple generations.
In their tribute, the foundation extended condolences to his family, loved ones and the wider creative community, saying:
"May the soul of Bra Sol rest in the peace and joy his works blessed us with."

Sol Rachilo's passing comes just a week after Lisa Koppel, wife of South African R&B singer Danny K, died on Sunday, 9 August 2026, aged 41, as reported by Briefly News.
Her family revealed for the first time on Tuesday that Lisa had been living with colorectal cancer since November 2023.
