Lisa Koppel, the wife of South African R&B singer Danny K, spent nearly three years battling colorectal cancer without a single public word about her condition. The 41-year-old passed away on Sunday, 9 August 2026, and it was only two days later that her family broke their silence, sharing the news of her diagnosis for the first time through journalist and anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee.
Her family confirmed that Lisa's silence was entirely her own choice. She had no desire for the public's sympathy or attention.
"Lisa chose to keep her illness private. She never wanted pity, attention or sympathy," the family said in their statement.

At the heart of her decision was a fierce desire to protect her children. Lisa wanted her three kids to hold onto their sense of normality and innocence for as long as she could give it to them.

"Above all, she wanted to protect her children and preserve their happiness and innocence for as long as possible," the family shared.
Rather than letting her diagnosis become the story of who she was, she chose to keep living quietly, centred on the people she loved most.
Lisa was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in November 2023. Over the years that followed, she and her loved ones pursued every available treatment, travelling both locally and internationally in search of hope.
"Together with her family, she searched for hope in South Africa and around the world, pursuing every treatment and every opportunity available to her," the family said.
Despite their efforts, she could not be saved. Her family expressed deep gratitude to the medical teams who cared for her throughout that journey.
Lisa Koppel's family shares advice
Although Lisa chose privacy in life, her family has now made her diagnosis public with purpose. Colorectal cancer is increasingly affecting younger people, and Lisa herself had hoped to one day speak about her experience to encourage early detection.
"She never got that opportunity. Her family will now carry that purpose forward in her name," the statement read.
The family also used the moment to highlight an important shift in screening guidelines. While colorectal cancer screenings were traditionally recommended from age 50, international recommendations now suggest routine screening from age 45 for those at average risk. They urged anyone experiencing persistent symptoms to consult a doctor and push for proper medical investigation.
