Lawrence Maleka is taking his career to the global stage. The South African actor and executive producer has made his international film festival debut at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), which is running across venues in Toronto, Canada until 20 September 2026.

Maleka kept his caption short and loaded when he posted "And so it begins…" on Instagram on Tuesday, 15 September 2026. The post gave little away, but the image told the full story — a TIFF banner for his new film, Future Tense.

What Is Future Tense About?

Directed by Jenna Cato Bass of Good Harbour Pictures, Future Tense is a South African-Australian science fiction drama. The film is described as being in the tradition of acclaimed horror titles The Babadook, Talk to Me and Bring Her Back. Maleka plays a character named Lwando, appearing alongside Kristen Raath as Tara and Qondiswa James.
