South African media personality Sizwe Dhlomo turned to X to poke holes in a jaw-dropping political claim that has been doing the rounds since former Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua made explosive allegations about President William Ruto and the late Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo.

Dhlomo quote-retweeted a post by @kamauwaruhiu, which put Gachagua's figure into sharp perspective. The tweet read:

"If Gachagua is to be believed and Ruto lost 1.5 trillion with the death of Chivayo, it would mean that he had 34% of our budget."

What did Gachagua actually claim?

During a public engagement in Boston, United States, on Sunday, 4 October 2026, Gachagua alleged that Chivayo had been entrusted with more than Ksh 1.5 trillion — equivalent to over US$11 billion, approximately R183.59 billion (183,594,400,000 ZAR) — on behalf of Ruto. According to the former deputy president, Chivayo served as a conduit, allegedly receiving and moving large sums of money, including transporting cash to Zimbabwe for safekeeping.

Gachagua further claimed that Ruto was left in a state of distress after Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, died in a helicopter accident.

"The guy has crashed with a helicopter… and Kasongo has gone berserk. This man has his money," Gachagua said, using the nickname Kasongo to refer to Ruto.

The allegations immediately spread across social media, drawing scrutiny from commentators and ordinary users alike who questioned both the scale of the figure and its plausibility given Kenya's national budget.

Peeps react to the claim

The post drew a range of reactions from across the continent:

@Pollsterrrr1 brought up a historical parallel:

"Mugabe once told us they couldn't account for 15 billion USD, while our GDP was about half the amount; this was from diamond sales alone. Now imagine how much business activity takes place in the whole country that we are not aware of? The underdevelopment is by design to keep us in the dark."

@herb78292 sat on the fence:

"Maths is not mathing. He might be on to something, though."

@AmandaTinotenda weighed in on Chivayo's reputation for lavish spending:

"Wicknell was long money, my guy🤣🤣. He was buying the general public of Zimbabwe Range Rovers every day."

@JKozey raised a related question about Chivayo's gift-giving:

"Does it sound realistic to you that Wicknell gave away gifts and cars worth around 54 million in Zimbabwe?"

@mutanttwotethis was sceptical of the mob mentality driving the outrage:
