A beloved Grade 2 learner from Vlottenburg Primary School in Lynedoch, Stellenbosch, has died after being struck by a train. Ruche Basson was 8 years old.

The school shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook on 26 August 2026. They described Ruche as one of their "beloved learners" and extended condolences to her family, classmates and the broader Lynedoch community.
According to Smile FM, authorities have since opened a culpable homicide investigation following the incident in the Stellenbosch area. The loss has cut deeply through the close-knit school and surrounding neighbourhood.
Among those most affected is Ruche's twin brother, who also attends the school. Teachers, fellow pupils and parents were left reeling by the news. The school's tribute described her as someone who would "always be part of the Vlottenburg family," and asked for prayers of strength and comfort for all who knew her.
