A heated online rivalry between South African and Kenyan social media users took over X on 4 October 2026, drawing thousands into a chaotic back-and-forth that blended economic debate, cultural pride and sharp wit.

The argument did not begin as a two-country showdown. It started as a conversation between Kenyan and Zimbabwean accounts about businessman Wicknell Chivayo, his alleged political ties, and financial claims circulating online. When South African users waded into the thread, Kenyan participants accused them of inserting themselves where they did not belong, and the dispute quickly escalated into a full national rivalry.

What each side was saying

Kenyan users leaned into arguments about indigenous economic ownership, self-determination, and the deep inequalities that still define South Africa's wealth distribution, including land ownership and the racial gap between rich and poor. They also brought in a pointed political jab, referencing Barack Obama's Kenyan heritage as proof of their country's global influence.

South Africans fired back with the country's significantly larger GDP, world-class infrastructure, and cultural exports. Sports comparisons also featured heavily, with users drawing contrasts in athletic achievement and international standing.

The lines that went viral

A few one-liners cut through the noise and were widely shared across threads. Abruzzi Collins wrote on X:

"Someone told South Africans they should first find a real name for their country; Kenyans can't beef with a compass direction."

Another user, Kuwa Strong, posted:

"You qualified for FIFA World Cup, but we still have the same number of World Cup trophies. Plus we don't worship white people, that's why we gave America their first black president."

Chivayo and Gachagua claims add fuel

Separate from the broader rivalry, South African media personality Sizwe Dhlomo weighed in on unverified allegations linked to former Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who had claimed that Wicknell Chivayo held large sums of money on behalf of Kenyan President William Ruto. The claims remain unverified, but their circulation across X added another layer of tension to an already heated exchange.
