A Pretoria teacher's farewell message to one of her learners left South Africa reaching for tissues. Simoné van Niekerk, a special education teacher and founder of Fill a Tummy NPC, shared a video on 11 September 2026 that quickly moved thousands of people across the country.

Van Niekerk has taught the same boy for six years. When she first met him, she said, very few people expected much of him. He has severe intellectual disabilities, and the general belief was that he would struggle to count or manage tasks on his own. She refused to accept that verdict.

A Friday ritual that proved everyone wrong

Over time, the young learner became her most reliable helper for Fill a Tummy NPC, a non-profit she founded in September 2023 after noticing children at her school going hungry over weekends. Every Friday morning, he walks up to her, asks how many parcels need to be packed, and then gets to work, counting bags, setting out the correct number and carefully filling each one with the right items, including bags of oranges and other essentials.

Van Niekerk said watching him do this fills her with immense pride, because it is proof of what becomes possible when a child is given patience, encouragement and someone who truly believes in them.

With the school year drawing to a close and the boy set to finish school, she recorded a personal message for him. She told him that there would be days when things felt hard and moments when he doubted himself, but urged him never to give up.

"Never let anyone make you feel that you are less capable because you learn or do things differently," she said. "Your story is only just the beginning."

She admitted she was dreading losing her Friday helper and did not yet know who would fill his place, but said she would always be incredibly proud of him.
