DURBAN — March and March movement leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma has opened a criminal case against ANC member Sello Lemonka Gemba following social media posts in which he called for her rape and killing.

According to Eyewitness News, Ngobese-Zuma, who was recently blocked from a GBV protest, filed the complaint at the Durban Central Police Station on Tuesday. Prior to her visit, she used X (formerly Twitter) to call on the public to support her as she headed to the station, after Gemba indicated he stood by his initial remarks rather than retracting them.

ANC distances itself from Gemba's remarks

The African National Congress moved swiftly to condemn the posts, describing them as vile and wholly incompatible with the movement's values. The party stated that no political, personal, or ideological justification exists for inciting violence or sexual abuse against any individual.

In addition to publicly distancing itself from Gemba's statements, the ANC called on law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. The party also confirmed it had launched a parallel internal inquiry to establish whether Gemba holds active membership. Should his membership be confirmed, formal disciplinary procedures will follow alongside the criminal investigation.

Criminal case and internal probe run concurrently

Gemba now faces a two-pronged response: a formal police investigation stemming from Ngobese-Zuma's complaint, and the possibility of internal ANC disciplinary action if his party membership is verified. Ngobese-Zuma leads the March and March movement, a civic organisation that has drawn attention for its activism in South Africa.
