KWAZULU-NATAL - Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma has slammed the South African Police Service and the eThekwini Municipality after violent scenes unfolded in Durban on 3 September 2026.
Chaos broke out on Moore Road in Durban during a clash between members of March and March and Congolese nationals. Over 100 migrants were stationed at a makeshift camp where they had sought refuge outside the Home Affairs offices after being displaced ahead of the 30 June nationwide protests against undocumented foreign nationals. At least 10 members of March and March were injured in the confrontation.
March and March members were cleaning up the area when the situation turned dangerous after a foreign national allegedly discharged a firearm during a confrontation. According to Ngobese-Zuma, the South African Police Service declined to search the informal tents for the weapon, stating that a search warrant was required.

Ngobese-Zuma lashes out at eThekwini and SAPS
Taking to X, Ngobese-Zuma directed frustration at both the eThekwini Municipality and the SAPS for failing to do more.
So the foreigners at Moore Rd have guns. eThekwini Municipality, and you have left them to stay there for months. The community is being abused, robbed and insulted by these people, and you continue to normalise lawlessness?"
"Today one of them discharged a firearm, but the police refused to dismantle those tents on the road and search for the weapon. They claimed they needed a warrant?"
She questioned why law-abiding citizens should comply with the law when the government allowed what she described as unlawful occupation to continue unchecked, particularly because those involved were foreign nationals.

March and March plans Ladysmith protest
Briefly News reported that March and March held a demonstration in Ladysmith on the same day as the chaos unfolded in Durban.
Ngobese-Zuma announced that the protest would be held following the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old.
Banele Manyoni was shot dead during a confrontation between foreign nationals and community members.
