Ekurhuleni Mayoral Candidate Nhongo Solo Attacked and Beaten at Gunpoint at Home

GAUTENG — Nhongo Solo, the People's Movement for Change (PMC) mayoral candidate for Ekurhuleni, was attacked and beaten at gunpoint at her home, the party has confirmed.

Three men were reportedly spotted near Solo's property before allegedly forcing entry into the residence. The attackers demanded her cellphone and banking details, then restrained Solo and a second person before making off with two cellphones, a laptop and bank cards.

PMC suspects political motive behind attack

The PMC stated its belief that the incident may have been politically motivated, though no formal motive has been established. The party called on all political parties and their supporters to honour the Electoral Code of Conduct and guarantee that candidates are able to campaign freely, without fear of intimidation or violence.

The attack took place as South Africa's political parties intensify preparations for the 4 November 2026 local government elections, a period during which concerns over candidate safety and electoral integrity have become increasingly pressing.

Attack follows Ramaphosa's GBVF pledge

The incident also comes days after President Cyril Ramaphosa unveiled a four-point plan on 29 September to address gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF). The plan includes a national case recovery operation, requirements for municipalities to conduct women's safety audits in high-risk areas, measures to address forensic backlogs and steps to curb alcohol-related violence in unsafe public spaces.

No arrests have been reported in connection with the attack on Solo at the time of publication.

Ekurhuleni men march against GBV

Briefly News also reported that residents, men's organisations, political leaders, sports clubs, and civic groups took to the streets of Kwa-Thema on 25 September 2026 for the Orange Day Solidarity Walk. The walk was a community-led march against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). The march was organised under the theme "Men Leading a United Stand Against GBV and Femicide.
