SOUTH AFRICA — Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Velenkosini Hlabisa has set 4 November 2026 as the date for the 2026 Local Government Elections, making the announcement in Durban on 7 August 2026.
According to IOL, the proclamation carries immediate legal consequences under the Electoral Act. By formally declaring the election date, Hlabisa triggered the closure of the national voters' roll, which means citizens can no longer register to vote or update their registration details. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) confirmed that all registered voters must cast their ballots at the specific voting station where they are currently registered.
