KWAZULU-NATAL - Ngizwe Mchunu and Nkosikhona "Phakel'umthakathi" Ndabandaba have held a face-to-face meeting.
The pair met on Thursday night, 7 August 2026, following weeks of public friction. The meeting follows a messy breakdown within the March and March movement, which was organising demonstrations against undocumented foreign nationals.

How the fallout began between the pair
Tensions began when Mchunu and Ndabandaba held a high-level meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa ahead of the June 30 protests. March and March movement leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma was left out of that meeting entirely.
After the details became public, March and March had suspended its working relationship with Mchunu pending an internal investigation. He was accused of accepting bribes to divide or undermine the March and March movement and weaken its stance. Mchunu denied the allegations.
How did Mchunu react?
Rather than stepping back quietly, Mchunu took his case directly to the public. He dismissed both Ndabandaba and Ngobese-Zuma as "juniors" who lacked experience and were chasing the spotlight. He claimed the pair were "excited by the limelight and relevance" and were celebrating his suspension rather than focusing on the cause.
He also announced he was walking away from anti-immigration demonstrations altogether. He called on Ndabandaba and Ngobese-Zuma to follow his lead, arguing that prolonged street blockades and national shutdowns posed a serious risk to South Africa's international reputation and economic stability.
Phakel'umthakathi suggest Mchunu accepted a bribe
Briefly News reported that Phakelumthakathi seemingly made explosive allegations against fellow activist Mchunu.
March and March recently cut ties with Mchunu, pending an internal investigation into allegations that Mchunu was offered a payout.
March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma said she only learned about Mchunu's meeting with Ramaphosa through social media.
