'Something Doesn't Add Up': Alex van Heerden's Estranged Husband Questions Kidnapping

GAUTENG — Reshaad Ismail, the estranged husband of candidate attorney Alex van Heerden, has publicly stated that aspects of her kidnapping on Thursday evening do not make sense, raising questions despite her safe recovery hours later in Vosloorus.

Ismail, a private investigator by profession, told the media he did not personally involve himself in the case, as it was already being managed by what he described as an "extremely capable team." He acknowledged that the team did "outstanding work" but maintained that the circumstances surrounding the abduction raised serious unanswered questions.

Details that raised Ismail's suspicions

Speaking to News24, Ismail disclosed that van Heerden was fed four times during the roughly 24 hours she was held. He noted that she showed no signs of emotional distress, her mental state appeared intact, she had no visible bruises, and crucially, no ransom was ever demanded. Drawing on nearly a decade of experience working kidnapping cases since 2017, Ismail said flatly: "Something does not add up here."

Ismail also addressed his personal relationship with van Heerden, saying their marriage began deteriorating in March but that the two currently maintain a cordial relationship. He stated he last saw her two weeks before the abduction and only learned of the kidnapping when her father called him at approximately 21:30 that evening, accusing him of being complicit.

It was van Heerden's father who brought SSS owner Mike Bolhuis onto the case. Ismail was clear, however, that Bolhuis was not responsible for her release. According to Ismail, van Heerden was instead released with money to cover an Uber fare and made her own way to the Vosloorus police station.

Ismail's alleged tto kidnapping networks

Ismail's involvement in the case has drawn scrutiny given allegations reported by News24. The publication previously reported that he received more than R1.2 million from Esmael Nangy, a suspected kidnapping mastermind based in Mozambique, while Ismail was working as a consultant to the family of a separate kidnapping victim in a case where Nangy was allegedly one of the orchestrators. General Mkhwanazi also confirmed during an ad hoc committee testimony that Ismail has close ties to senior police officers.

Ismail has not publicly addressed those specific allegations in relation to this case.

One person has been arrested in connection with van Heerden's abduction and is expected to appear in court on Monday.
