GAUTENG — Brigadier Dineo Mokwele has thanked Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for standing up for what is right.

The Head of Technical Support Services within the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Crime Intelligence paid special tribute to the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner outside the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on 21 August 2026.

Brigadier Mokwele thanked General Mkhwanazi after prosecutors unconditionally withdrew all charges against her. The charges stemmed from alleged irregularities surrounding her promotion within Crime Intelligence in 2024.

She was arrested in June 2025, and the case attracted significant public scrutiny in the months that followed. Evidence presented before the Madlanga Commission, combined with an intervention by the National Director of Public Prosecutions, ultimately led to the charges being dismissed.

Mokwele thanks Mkhwanazi for speaking out

Addressing the media after the charges were dropped, Mokwele singled out General Mkhwanazi.

"I'm especially grateful to Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi for putting his credibility on the line and standing up for what he believed is right for the nation," she said.

How General Mkhwanazi’s press briefing brought about change

General Mkhwanazi’s explosive briefing on 6 July 2025, during which he made allegations about criminality, political interference and corruption within the criminal justice system, led to the formation of the Madlanga Commission.

It was before the Commission that Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head Advocate Andrea Johnson admitted that the decision to arrest and prosecute Mokwele was based on factually incorrect information.

She further admitted she never personally reviewed Mokwele's CV, job application, or qualifications before authorising the corruption case, relying instead on a team briefing.

Advocate Johnson apologises to Brigadier Mokwele

Briefly News also reported that the former head of IDAC, Advocate Andrea Johnson, was forced into a public apology at the Madlanga Commission.
