GAUTENG — A fatal stabbing during Spring Day festivities in Refilwe, Cullinan, prompted community members to take the law into their own hands on 2 September 2026, before police stepped in to make an arrest.

According to eNCA, the victim, 21-year-old Tshepang Nyathi, was killed after a water-splashing tradition turned violent in Extension 3. A group of youths had been marking the arrival of spring by dousing passing pedestrians with water when a confrontation broke out. When one passerby refused to join in and was targeted by the group, he allegedly produced a knife and stabbed Nyathi in the upper body before fleeing the scene.

Community assault in Refilwe

Witnesses and bystanders gave chase, catching up with the suspect a short distance from where the stabbing occurred. The crowd assaulted the man before the police arrived. Emergency services transported Nyathi to a nearby medical facility, where he later died from his injuries.

Officers subsequently tracked down the suspect at a local clinic, where he was receiving treatment for wounds sustained during the community assault. He was placed under arrest at the clinic.

Murder charge and court appearance expected

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that the arrested man remains under investigation for murder and is due to appear before the Cullinan Magistrate's Court on Thursday. Nevhuhulwi used the opportunity to caution residents against mob justice, urging communities to allow law enforcement to handle criminal matters through the appropriate legal channels rather than resorting to vigilante action.
