DJ Maphorisa, real name Themba Sekowe, turned a live performance into a pointed message for music executive Nota at a recent Cosmopolitan event. Footage shared by lindamnkhonto on X captured the Amapiano heavyweight mid-groove, belting out a graduation song whose lyrics spoke to working hard out of fear of being judged by controversial figures, a moment the crowd immediately linked to Nota.

The lyrics reportedly conveyed a desire to put in the work because of people who talk too much, with Nota widely understood to be the target. Nota has built a reputation for claiming he played a hand in the success of several prominent South African artists, a stance that has drawn both ridicule and debate across the industry.

The feud between Phori and Nota

The tension between the two men has been brewing publicly for some time. Nota has used podcast appearances to criticise Maphorisa's approach to the industry, arguing that the producer dominates stages and blocks younger talent from getting shine. Maphorisa responded on Instagram Live, dismissing Nota as someone whose record label collapsed and who holds little financial weight in the current music landscape. He reportedly went further, threatening to have Nota barred from events including his Scorpion Kings concert.
