Murder, Rape Cases Drop in KZN, but Police Remain Concerned Over 1,179 Deaths

• KwaZulu-Natal recorded declines in murder, rape and robbery during April to June 2026, according to the latest SAPS crime statistics
• Despite the drop, Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Phumelele Makoba warned against complacency as the province's figures remain alarming
• SAPS also revealed that 48 police officers were dismissed during the period, with thousands of suspects arrested across multiple operations

KWAZULU-NATAL — KwaZulu-Natal recorded modest declines in several serious crime categories during the first quarter of the 2026/2027 financial year, but Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Phumelele Makoba cautioned that the numbers still represent a profound crisis for the province.

The South African Police Service released the statistics, covering April to June 2026, on Friday.

KZN murder and rape figures

Murder cases dropped by 20 compared to the same quarter last year, a 1.7% decrease, with 1,179 people killed in the three-month period. Inanda recorded the sharpest improvement, with 15 fewer murders, a 19.2% decline. Umlazi and Esikhaleni also recorded reductions of six and five cases respectively.

However, several stations moved in the opposite direction. Cato Manor recorded 20 additional murders, Ntuzuma saw 12 more, and Empangeni recorded 11 extra cases. Police analysts linked 124 murders and 422 attempted murders to arguments, road rage, misunderstandings and provocation.

"We cannot normalise this and be happy that the crime of murder has gone down," Makoba said.

Rape cases fell by 1.3%, with 24 fewer incidents reported compared to the previous year. Despite that reduction, 1,820 women were raped in KZN between April and June. Inanda emerged as a rape hotspot, recording 24 more cases, a 31.6% increase. Stations including Madadeni, KwaMakhutha, Pietermaritzburg, Ntuzuma, Jozini and Sydenham also recorded increases.

Domestic violence and assault remain elevated

Domestic violence continued to pose a significant challenge. According to SAPS, 32 women and 14 men died in domestic-related incidents during the quarter. There were also 115 attempted murder cases and 881 malicious-damage-to-property cases connected to domestic disputes.

Assault cases totalled 9,282, an 8.3% increase on the previous year, with 4,011 of those linked to domestic violence.

Operations and enforcement

Between January and September 2026, KZN police arrested 112,397 suspects through Operation Shanela and routine policing. Among those detained were 11,235 undocumented foreign nationals. Officers also recovered 2,487 firearms and 29,353 rounds of ammunition.

Makoba confirmed that 48 police officers were dismissed or dishonourably discharged for corruption and criminal conduct, warning that public trust could not be rebuilt while rogue officers remained in the service.

With the 2026 Local Government Elections approaching, Makoba said police would deploy sufficient resources to protect voters and allow political parties to campaign freely. She urged party supporters to refrain from intimidation and violence.

Stats SA contadicts SAPS records

Briefly News also reported that Statistics South Africa's latest Victims of Crime survey exposed a sharp contradiction between what households reported experiencing and what the South African Police Service officially recorded, particularly around murder. Released on 1 September 2026, the survey found that the number of households affected by murder climbed 21% year-on-year to 17,000 during the 2025/26 period. Over five years, that figure has grown by 6.8%, amounting to roughly 63,000 households affected by murder in total.
