LIMPOPO — A 37-year-old woman lost her life after her 44-year-old boyfriend allegedly attacked her with a hammer while she was on duty at the University of Limpopo campus in Polokwane.
The victim, employed as a security guard at the university, was at her post at approximately 8:40pm on Saturday when the suspect arrived on campus and launched the brutal assault. According to police, the man struck her on the head with a hammer, leaving her critically injured.

Witnesses on campus did not allow the attacker to escape. After the assault, the suspect allegedly attempted to drive away in a vehicle, but students who had seen what happened pursued him. He abandoned the car and tried to make his getaway on foot, but the students caught up with him and detained him until police arrived.

The injured woman was transported to Mankweng Hospital for emergency treatment but later died from her wounds. The suspect was formally arrested and now faces a murder charge.
Domestic violence not ruled out
Police have yet to establish a clear motive for the attack. Investigators have, however, not ruled out domestic violence, and the probe into the circumstances surrounding the woman's death remains ongoing.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Jan Scheepers used the incident to appeal to members of the public to report signs of domestic violence before situations escalate to fatal levels.
KZN woman killed by boyfriend
In similar news, a 43-year-old woman was allegedly strangled and killed by her boyfriend at the Cornubia Flats in Cornubia, KwaZulu-Natal, in the early hours of Saturday, 8 August 2026, with her 12-year-old son present during the attack. Private security received a call from concerned neighbours at approximately 06:19 and dispatched officers to the scene. On arrival, they discovered the woman's lifeless body outside her home near the front door.
Bohlokong woman shot dead by lover
Previously, Briefly News reported that a 22-year-old woman died after she was allegedly shot by her boyfriend at their home in Bohlokong on Sunday, 16 August 2026. The incident occurred at approximately 16:00 when the couple became embroiled in an argument at their residence. The boyfriend allegedly opened fire on his girlfriend, who was pronounced dead at the scene. He then left the residence and entered the street, where he was wounded in a separate shooting incident.
