GAUTENG — A joint law enforcement operation on 9 October 2026 disrupted a planned cash-in-transit robbery in Roodepoort, resulting in three suspects killed and two others taken into custody after a dramatic confrontation that also injured three civilians. The incident happened less than two weeks after three suspected robbers were killed in a shootout with the police in Tshwane.
According to the South African Police Service, acting on prior intelligence, officers tracked two suspect vehicles en route to Roodepoort. Police intercepted a white Mercedes-Benz at traffic signals along Kliprivier Road and directed occupants to stop. The occupants responded by opening fire on law enforcement. Officers returned fire, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which then collided with two civilian cars on the N12 highway. Three bystanders caught in the crash were injured and taken to hospital.

Shortly after the shooting, investigators located a second suspect vehicle, a white Audi, in the Johannesburg central business district. Two accomplices linked to the planned heist were arrested without further incident.

Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni commended the operation, crediting a multi-agency task force that included SAPS specialised units, traffic airwing officers, and private security teams. He described the intervention as decisive action that prevented what could have been a violent armed robbery.
The operation reflects growing co-operation between public law enforcement and private security operators in countering organised cash-in-transit crime across Gauteng.
