South Africa is bracing for dangerous heat and fire conditions on Thursday, with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) flagging extremely high veld fire danger across most of the Northern Cape and a continuing heatwave warning for parts of the Eastern Cape.
The heatwave advisory covers areas within the Chris Hani and Alfred Nzo district municipalities and remains in place until Sunday, 1 November. Residents in those areas are urged to limit time outdoors during the hottest part of the day, drink water consistently and wear protective clothing.
Northern Cape faces greatest fire risk
The Northern Cape is carrying the heaviest weather risk on Thursday. Extremely high veld fire conditions are expected across most of the province, with hot to very hot temperatures expected inland. Western parts will be cloudy with mist, while the eastern parts will turn partly cloudy by afternoon. SAWS is urging residents, farmers and outdoor workers to avoid any activities that could spark accidental fires.

The Western Cape is also seeing intense heat, particularly over the Central Karoo, where very hot conditions are forecast. The UVB sunburn index is rated very high for the province, making sun protection essential for anyone spending time outdoors.

The Free State will be hot, with isolated afternoon thundershowers developing in the eastern parts. KwaZulu-Natal can expect morning fog over interior areas, clearing to warm and partly cloudy conditions, with isolated thundershowers in the far western parts of the province. The UVB sunburn index is very high across KZN as well.
The Eastern Cape will see warm to hot conditions across both halves of the province, with morning and evening coastal fog expected in places. Moderate to fresh north-easterly winds are forecast along the coast.
SAWS advises all South Africans to monitor official weather updates as conditions develop, particularly those in fire-prone or heat-affected areas.
