Athletics South Africa Mourns Runner Elizabeth Moselakgomo Killed in Kempton Park

Athletics South Africa (ASA) has expressed condolences to the family of 38-year-old runner Elizabeth "Tsontso" Moselakgomo, whose body was identified at the Germiston mortuary on Monday, 14 September 2026.

Moselakgomo disappeared last week after setting out for a run from her home in Rhodesfield. Her death forms part of a broader investigation into the killings of five women in the Kempton Park area.
ASA calls for justice after runner's death
ASA Acting CEO Terrence Magogodela said Moselakgomo’s death had left the athletics community grieving, with the governing body extending its condolences to her family, friends and everyone affected by the tragedy.

Magogodela said ASA was hopeful that the investigation would uncover the circumstances surrounding her death and lead to those responsible being held accountable.
The athletics body also highlighted the wider safety concerns facing women who exercise in public spaces. ASA said women should be able to run and participate in sport without having to fear for their personal safety.
Team Vitality pays tribute to fellow runner
Moselakgomo's club, Team Vitality, also released a statement honouring her memory as a dedicated athlete and valued member of their running community.
"Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Elizabeth's family, her child, friends, loved ones and everyone whose lives she touched. We cannot begin to imagine the pain they are experiencing, and we stand with them during this incredibly difficult time," Team Vitality said.
The club asked the wider running community and public to keep Moselakgomo's family in their thoughts.
Waterfall City Athletics Club also announced that on Tuesday 15 September, a run will be held across multiple Gauteng locations, including Waterfall, Bryanston, Centurion, Springs, Fourways, Pretoria, Benoni and Greenstone. Participants have been asked to wear black as a mark of respect.
A task team has been established to investigate the deaths of the five women in the Kempton Park area, including that of Moselakgomo.
