Pirates Give Update As Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, 5 Others Hosptalised After Road Accident

Orlando Pirates have provided an update after it was confirmed that their first-team coach, Abdeslam Ouaddou, and five members of the club’s staff were involved in a road accident while returning from Gqeberha, following their game against Chippa United.

The Soweto giants won 3-0 over Chippa United in the Betway Premiership on Sunday, August 31, 2025. Summer signing Oswin Appollis produced another Man of the Match performance. However, the victory celebration was marred by news that their coach and technical staff were involved in an accident.

Ouaddou and the technical members had exited the team bus to assist victims of an earlier car accident when a third vehicle crashed into the stationary cars, resulting in serious injuries. The coach and other club officials were immediately taken to the hospital and remain under medical care.

Pirates provide updates on Ouaddou and others' condition

Orlando Pirates took to their official website to release a statement providing an update about the conditions of coach Ouaddou and others involved in the accident.

"Orlando Pirates Football Club confirms that Abdeslam Ouaddou and five members of the technical staff were involved in a road traffic accident on Sunday night," the Soweto giants announced.

The Sea Robbers also explained the circumstances leading to the accident in the statement they released.

"The accident happened on the R21 highway as the squad was returning from Gqeberha, following their resounding 3–0 win over Chippa United," the Buccaneers stated.

"After coming across a collision involving two vehicles, Coach Ouaddou and several staff members disembarked from the team bus to assist those involved in the collision. Tragically, while they were attending to the unfortunate incident, a Nissan NP200 truck collided with the stationary vehicles, striking the group and causing serious injuries."

The Premier Soccer League giants confirmed the immediate hospitalisation of their first-team coach and the five other technical members who were involved in the accident to ensure they receive proper care.

"Coach Ouaddou and the five injured staff members were swiftly taken to the hospital, where they continue to receive medical treatment," the club confirmed.
"Orlando Pirates remains in close communication with the attending medical professionals and will share further updates on their recovery when appropriate."

Pirates ended the statement by requesting privacy as their coach and staff recover from the serious injuries they suffered in the accident.

“Right now, our primary concern is the health and well-being of our colleagues,” the Betway Premiership giants concluded.

The Premier Soccer League is on break due to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which would give Ouaddou and other club members time to recover before the league resumes in a few days.
