The 26-year-old forward carried the niggle through South Africa's 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign and into the Buccaneers' pre-season preparations. Although the injury does not require surgical intervention, the medical team has advised a significant rest period to allow full recovery.

Makgopa's absence puts AFCON qualifiers at risk

The timeline makes it highly unlikely that Makgopa will be available for South Africa's upcoming 2026 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures. His possible return to action is projected to fall after the international break, with Pirates' league clash against TS Galaxy on 18 October identified as a realistic target for his comeback.

In the interim, the striker is expected to miss several high-stakes matches, including the MTN8 semi-final and the opening fixtures of Orlando Pirates' CAF Champions League campaign, which kicks off in early September.

Pirates turn to Mbuthuma and new arrivals

With Makgopa unavailable, Yanela Mbuthuma has taken over as the lead striker, with Boitumelo Radiopane offering cover from the bench. The club's attacking options have also been bolstered by new signing Sebastian Pedersen, who joined last week, and Sifiso Luthuli.

Makgopa's absence will be felt keenly given his contribution over the past three seasons. Across 102 appearances for the Buccaneers, the forward has scored 23 goals and registered nine assists. His performances formed a central part of a highly successful period for the club, which produced eight trophies, including a domestic treble last season.

If Makgopa adheres to the projected recovery schedule, he will sit out at least six matches before returning to the fold in October.
