The South African Football Association has confirmed that its National Executive Committee approved the appointment of Pitso Mosimane as Bafana Bafana head coach, but a formal announcement has been delayed while the two parties finalise contractual terms.

SAFA president Danny Jordaan addressed the matter directly, stating:
"The NEC has approved the appointment of coach Pitso to Bafana Bafana, but we still need to tie up some loose ends. We will make a formal announcement of the coach next week."
Salary dispute delays formal confirmation
The sticking point, according to reports, centred on remuneration. SAFA's opening offer stood at R5 million per year, a figure that fell considerably short of the R1.4 million per month that outgoing coach Hugo Broos earned during his tenure. Mosimane himself was earning approximately R1.5 million per month when he departed Mamelodi Sundowns in 2020.

FARPost reported that SAFA has since revised its offer following pressure from Mosimane's representatives, who argued the initial package did not reflect his standing or track record. The improved proposal has narrowed the gap between the two sides, with negotiations understood to be focused on finalising the remaining contractual details.

The Bafana Bafana coaching position opened up after Broos ended his five-year stint with the team. During that period, the Belgian guided South Africa to back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations appearances, including a third-place finish at the 2023 edition. The team also qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, and reached the knockout phase for the first time in the country's history.
Before Mosimane emerged as the frontrunner, Rulani Mokwena and Benni McCarthy were also linked with the vacancy.
