Thembinkosi Lorch: Kaizer Chiefs in Talks to Sign Ex Orlando Pirates Star in Blockbuster PSL Move

  • Broadcaster Robert Marawa confirmed Lorch was spotted at FNB Stadium, with reports placing him inside the Kaizer Chiefs setup for several days
  • Lorch is contracted to Libyan club Al Ittihad Tripoli until December 2027 and reportedly earns around R1.2 million per month, complicating any deal
  • Former Kaizer Chiefs players are divided on whether signing the ex-Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns star fits the club's current direction

Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly in advanced negotiations to sign former Orlando Pirates winger Thembinkosi Lorch, a move that could reshape the landscape of the Premier Soccer League ahead of the new season.

Broadcaster Robert Marawa confirmed on air that Lorch had been spotted at FNB Stadium, the home ground of Kaizer Chiefs. FARPost reporter Mthokozisi Dube further reported that the 33-year-old had been present in and around the Amakhosi training environment for several days. Neither Kaizer Chiefs nor Lorch's representatives have issued an official statement confirming the deal is at an advanced stage.

Lorch's contract and financial hurdles

Lorch signed a 30-month contract with Libyan club Al Ittihad Tripoli in January 2026, binding him to the club until 31 December 2027. His reported salary of approximately R1.2 million (€75,000) per month presents a significant obstacle, as any agreement would likely require him to accept a substantial reduction in earnings. The potential transfer fee could also surpass R15 million, adding further financial weight to the negotiations.

The winger's most recent spell in top-flight football included a loan move to Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca, where he featured at the FIFA Club World Cup. His search for a more prominent role is understood to be a key driver behind his interest in a return to South African football. Moroccan club Maghreb Fès have also been linked with the player and could yet emerge as rivals for his signature.

Should the transfer be completed, Lorch would enter a select group of players to have represented all three of South African football's biggest clubs: Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Kaizer Chiefs. His time at Sundowns became increasingly difficult following the departure of coach Rulani Mokwena, limiting his opportunities in the first team.

Former Chiefs players disagree on the move

The speculation has drawn contrasting responses from within the Kaizer Chiefs fraternity. Former defender Dominic Isaacs backed the signing, arguing that Lorch's creativity and ability to unsettle organised defences could add a meaningful attacking dimension to the squad.

Former club captain Lifa Gqosha raised concerns, questioning whether committing significant resources to a 33-year-old aligns with the club's stated rebuilding strategy, which has leaned towards developing younger talent.
