Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz came under scrutiny after his side failed to hold on for a victory against Mamelodi Sundowns, settling for a 1-1 draw at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 15 August 2026.

The Glamour Boys appeared to be on course for all three points when Phili, making his first start, put Chiefs ahead. However, Sundowns substitute Mailula came off the bench to restore parity and deny the hosts a memorable win.

**Analyst Questions Da Cruz's Substitution**

Football analyst and Mamelodi Sundowns supporter Themba Modise weighed in on the tactical decisions made during the match, pointing specifically to the removal of Phili as a turning point.

"Kaizer Chiefs might have claimed all three points if da Cruz had left Phili on the pitch cos he would continue to threaten our defence," Modise said.

Modise also directed criticism at Chiefs goalkeeper Brendan Petersen, whose handling in the lead-up to Mailula's equaliser drew attention. "Brendan Petersen could have done better with Mailula goal, and it's second week running he made mistake after what he did against Golden Arrows in the MTN8," the analyst added.

**Petersen Under Pressure After Back-to-Back Errors**

The observation from Modise places added pressure on Petersen, who is now facing questions about his consistency between the posts after errors in consecutive matches. His earlier lapse against Golden Arrows in the MTN8 had already raised concerns, and Saturday's performance has done little to ease them.

Despite the dropped points, Phili's debut goal offered a bright spark for Chiefs supporters, hinting at the potential impact the player could have in the season ahead if given consistent opportunities.

Da Cruz will need to address the tactical and defensive concerns ahead of the Glamour Boys' next fixture, with both his substitution timing and his goalkeeper's form now firmly in the spotlight following back-to-back disappointing results.
