Kaizer Chiefs urged to sign star striker from Premier Soccer League rivals

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Tsepo Masilela has urged his former club to make a move for Golden Arrows striker Junior Dion.

The Ivorian-born forward finished as one of the league’s top scorers last season after finding the net 14 times. He has continued his impressive form this campaign, already scoring four goals.

Speaking to Peter Du Toit on SoccerBeat, the former Bafana Bafana left-back backed Dion to improve Chiefs’ attacking options, insisting the striker is better than the club’s current forwards.

Masilela pointed to the injury problems experienced by Etiosa Ighodaro and Khanyisa Mayo, while Flavio Silva has struggled to score consistently.

“When you have your front players who are consistently in and out, if you look at Ighodaro in that list, Silva, you have your Mayo, so I’ll definitely go for Dion,” Masilela said.

“He scores goals and he scored today against Sundowns. He doesn’t just score against the so-called small teams. He is a punisher, he knows how to score and he knows how to get into the box. He has all the attributes to help Kaizer Chiefs.”

Chiefs have made six signings this season, with Mayo the only striker added to the squad, although his move was made permanent following his loan spell.

Former Chiefs assistant coach Farouk Khan also agreed with Masilela’s assessment, suggesting Dion’s physical presence could allow the club’s younger attacking players to flourish.

“Chiefs need a balance upfront and need a big guy, you just mentioned. Besides making those near-post runs, he’s got the physicality to hold the ball up,” Khan said.

“If you have him, then Vilakazi, Duba and Shabalala can be more productive.”

During Chiefs 3-2 win over Siwelele this past weekend, no out-and-out striker started the match for Fernando Da Cruz.
