Mamelodi Sundowns have submitted an improved bid for Polokwane City right-back Thabang Matuludi as the Tshwane club races to plug a deepening defensive hole ahead of a congested fixture schedule.

A source within the club confirmed the development to KickOff, stating: "The club has submitted a new offer for the services of the player. They have now increased the offer by a few million."

**Sundowns Scramble at Right-Back**

The urgency behind Sundowns' pursuit stems from a series of injury setbacks at right-back. Khuliso Mudau is sidelined with a long-term injury, and the situation worsened on Wednesday when Zuko Mdunyelwa was stretchered off during a Betway Premiership clash against Milford FC at Loftus Versfeld. Thapelo Morena now stands as the club's sole recognised option in that position, a situation the reigning African champions are keen to resolve quickly.

KickOff reported that Sundowns have significantly increased their initial bid and are optimistic about concluding a deal within the coming days, provided Polokwane City and the player accept the terms.

**Pirates Also in the Hunt for Matuludi**

Sundowns' pursuit is unlikely to go unchallenged. Orlando Pirates have maintained a sustained interest in the 27-year-old since June, when Matuludi travelled with the Bafana Bafana squad to the 2026 FIFA World Cup as cover for Mudau. He did not feature in any of the matches.

A transfer to the Soweto club has not yet materialised, and Pirates have since created additional room in their right-back options following the release of Deano van Rooyen, leaving the door open for further recruitment in that area.

Matuludi has represented Rise and Shine in 72 appearances, contributing six goals and a handful of assists across his time at the club. He is yet to feature this season, with his future at Polokwane still unresolved.

Whether Sundowns' revised offer is sufficient to edge out competition from Pirates remains to be seen, though the club's growing injury concerns appear to be driving a sense of urgency in the negotiations.
