Jayden Adams' Cousin Shares Emotional Tribute Months After Footballer's Death

Joshua Adams posted an emotional 20-slide Instagram carousel in tribute to his late cousin Jayden Adams, the Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder who died in Cape Town on 11 July 2026 at the age of 25.
In his caption, Joshua wrote directly to his cousin:
"You weren't just my cousin, you were my big brother, my protector, the one who fought my battles when I couldn't fight them myself... I'll forever be proud to call you my cousin."
He added that he wished Jayden had known just how loved he was and how many people would have stood by his side.
A life lived for football
Adams earned 13 caps for Bafana Bafana, scored twice, and was part of the squad that claimed bronze at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

His final chapter in football came at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he helped South Africa reach the knockout stages for the first time in the country's history. He started matches against Mexico and the Czech Republic, and came off the bench in the win over South Korea, before Bafana were eliminated by Canada in the round of 32.
His World Cup run was shadowed by personal grief. His grandmother, Marianna, passed away on 17 June 2026, the day before South Africa's group match against the Czech Republic. Adams started the game regardless, playing through his loss in a 1-1 draw.
Western Cape police registered an inquest following his death on 11 July 2026 at a property in Military Road, Schotsche Kloof. The cause of death had not been officially confirmed and remained under investigation at the time of the most recent reporting.
Family and fans still grieving
The carousel Joshua shared is a deeply personal collection: childhood photos, nights out, a shot of Jayden holding his AFCON bronze medal alongside Joshua, a signed Bafana Bafana jersey, and his name lit up on a stadium screen.

A public funeral was held on 25 July 2026 at Stellenbosch University's Coetzenburg Centre. His former youth coach, Jason Rhoda, remembered him as "a small, timid boy who played the game without fear."
