The Instagram page sundownsxtra shared a split image showing Motsepe next to a dark red BMW carrying the "DOWNS 5 GP" registration plate, with the plate circled in red and linked directly to the Sundowns chairman. The car appears to be a BMW 7 Series, the German manufacturer's flagship luxury sedan, though its exact model year and specification could not be confirmed from the photograph.

Pricing for the BMW 7 Series in South Africa varies significantly. New examples of the current generation start above R2 million, while used 2019 models such as the 740i have appeared on dealer listings for well under R1 million, making it difficult to place a precise value on the vehicle without knowing its spec.

This is not the first time a BMW has been linked to Motsepe. A 2022 Soccer Laduma report noted that the Sundowns chairman arrived at Loftus Versfeld in a BMW bearing a "DOWNS11" plate, though no model was identified on that occasion either.

A separate video shared on X by @YELL0MAN captured a man identified in the post as Motsepe greeting a Sundowns supporter in a yellow jersey. In the clip, he is dressed in a white Puma T-shirt, sunglasses and light-coloured trousers, standing beside a dark SUV with a coupe-style roofline and large multi-spoke alloy wheels.

The man behind the club

Motsepe is the eldest son of billionaire businessman and Mamelodi Sundowns founder Patrice Motsepe, who stepped back from running the club after he was elected Confederation of African Football president in March 2021. Thlopie, who was 32 at the time, took over as chairman and remains the youngest chairman in the Premier Soccer League.

His tenure has coincided with one of the most successful stretches in the club's history. Sundowns claimed the league title in the 2020/21, 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons, won the inaugural African Football League, and lifted the CAF Champions League trophy in May 2026 after defeating AS FAR 2-1 on aggregate. It was the club's second continental title, following their 2016 triumph.

Former Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi once described the chairman as principled, humble and intelligent, while Motsepe himself recalled that his mindset was on day one.
