Kaizer Chiefs have drawn praise from a former top-flight striker after walking away from a transfer deal for TS Galaxy winger Seluleko Mahlambi, with critics questioning whether the 21-year-old justifies the R10 million asking price.
Amakhosi had expressed strong interest in signing the attacker and reportedly tabled an offer of R4 million. TS Galaxy rejected that bid and held firm at R10 million, a figure the Soweto giants were not willing to match.
**Was Mahlambi Worth R10 Million?
Mahlambi had a productive 2024/25 season in the DStv Premiership, contributing 12 goals directly, scoring six and assisting a further six. Despite those numbers, ex-Orlando Pirates forward Katlego Mashego told KickOff that Mahlambi's single standout campaign was insufficient justification for such a significant outlay.

"R10 million sounds like a lot of money for a player who has performed well for TS Galaxy for one season. Did he really set the scene alight last season? Did he perform at the level of Rele Mofokeng and others?" Mashego said.
Mashego pointed out that the R10 million figure represents roughly half the prize money a club receives for winning the league, making it a considerable gamble on a player with limited top-flight experience.
"The boy has not played much in the PSL, so I do not know whether he will be able to help Chiefs win the league. They would be paying half of the prize money awarded for winning the league for one player. Chiefs need players who can return them to where they belong, so I do not know if he is worth R10 million," he added.
**Mashego Backs Chiefs' Decision**
While acknowledging that Mahlambi performed admirably last season, Mashego maintained that spending at that level on a single developing player carries too much risk for a club with bigger ambitions.
"The boy did very well last season, but will he end Chiefs' league title drought, maybe if they are also going to sign other players? Spending R10 million on one player will not help a club improve," he concluded.
Kaizer Chiefs have endured a prolonged wait for a league title and are under pressure to assemble a squad capable of mounting a genuine title challenge in the upcoming season.
