A Johannesburg content creator has stirred up a heated conversation online after calling out American social media users for telling South Africans how to shorten the name of their own country.

@okami_blackwolf, who goes by Okami and has 47.8K followers on TikTok, posted the reaction clip on 10 September 2026. In it, he described how a South African woman had used "SA" as a straightforward abbreviation in a video about local school start times, only to be met with complaints from American users who said it made them uncomfortable.

Okami was unimpressed. He called out what he saw as a pattern of Americans policing how South Africans use their own language and identity, referencing past complaints about the word "coloured" and even jokes about flight paths.

"Only the ones from the land of burgers and bullets would have the audacity to tell other people how they should abbreviate their country's name," he said.

What does SA actually stand for?

The clip opened up a surprisingly technical debate in the comments. While South Africans routinely use "SA" in everyday conversation and in government publications, the abbreviation is formally assigned to Saudi Arabia under international ISO country codes.

South Africa's official international code is actually ZA, derived from the old Dutch and Afrikaans name "Zuid-Afrika". In formal diplomatic and US government contexts, the country is more commonly referred to as RSA, short for Republic of South Africa.

Several commenters were quick to point this out, turning the moment into an unexpected civics lesson.
